Heavy Equipment Operator – 6 month term

Reports To: Lead Hand – Kenloch Waste Management
Location: Kenloch, NS
Position: Full-Time

The Municipality of the County of Inverness is seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment Operator. The successful candidate will operate a variety of heavy equipment and perform maintenance on municipal infrastructure to sustain an acceptable standard for public safety and convenience. The Heavy Equipment Operator will work in an outdoor environment in variety of weather conditions. This role requires moderate to heavy physical activity. A commitment to teamwork, achieving excellence in safety, and quality performance through continuous development will be demonstrated by the successful candidate.

• Operate a variety of heavy equipment including, but not limited to, excavator, backhoe, transfer truck and walking floor trailer.
• Under the direction of the Lead Hand – Kenloch Waste Management, ensure separation and proper disposal of materials, cleanliness of site is maintained, and interactions with public are professional.
• Maintain courteous and positive public relations with residents of the community, representatives of organizations and visitors by delivering quality service.
• Adhere to federal & provincial legislation and regulations.
• Adhere to Municipal policies and procedures.
• Other related duties as assigned.

• Ensure all policies and procedures set forth by the Municipality of the County of Inverness are observed at all times.
• Report to the Lead Hand – Kenloch Waste Management and Manager of Solid Waste, all work situations which are suspected of being unhealthy or unsafe.
• Report to the Lead Hand – Kenloch Waste Management and Manager of Solid Waste, any employee whose on-the-job performance or actions contravenes established safety procedures or work practices.
• Report all near-misses and incidents to the Lead Hand – Kenloch Waste Management and Manager of Solid Waste immediately.
• Report to the Lead Hand – Kenloch Waste Management and Manager of Solid Waste, all Occupational Health & Safety related injuries or property damage regardless of severity.
• Submit reports on accidents and other hazardous conditions discovered and promptly attend to all hazardous situations.

• High school diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED) or Completion of post-secondary education.
• Certification related to construction, heavy equipment operation, etc. (i.e. Heavy Equipment Operator Program).
• A valid class 1 driver’s license with air brakes is an asset.
• WHMIS, TDG and First Aid Training, an asset.
• Working knowledge of requirements of the NS Motor Vehicle Act and the National Safety Code including but not limited to daily trip inspections, reporting of defects and abnormalities, driver’s logbook, and roadside inspections.
• The ability to work cooperatively and effectively in a team environment as well as independently.
• An understanding of and ability to execute oral and written instruction and maintain records as assigned.
