Storm preparedness

Make plans to stay safe

Maintain a household emergency kit

The key to staying safe is to prepare in advance. Be sure that you have enough supplies to take care of yourself and your household for a minimum of 72 hours.
Stock up on water, ready-to-eat food and heating fuel, and make sure you have a battery-powered or wind-up flashlight and radio, as well as extra batteries. Think about including the following items in your emergency kit.

  • Drinking water – at least 2 litres per person per day, 1 litre per pet per day
  • Food that won’t spoil: canned food, energy bars and dried foods (replace food and water once a year)
  • Manual can opener and bottle opener
  • First aid kit
  • Prescription medication, infant formula, equipment for people with disabilities or food, water and medication for your pets or service animal

Be prepared

  • Be prepared for power outages
  • Make sure that there is gasoline in vehicles
  • Trim dead branches and cut down dead trees to reduce the danger of these falling onto your house

In an emergency, call 911
