Conservation Notice for Users of the Inverness County Water Utility

The Municipality of the County of Inverness is requesting that all users of the Municipal water systems work together to conserve water. June has been a mostly hot, dry month and we are now just entering the peak of hot and dry conditions. The Municipality is also expecting a rise in tourism within the area this summer.
To conserve water, please follow these tips diligently:

• Watering your lawns and washing your vehicles are luxuries and should be avoided during peak dry season.
• Water plants and flowers in the early morning to avoid evaporation.
• Use a rain barrel to collect any rain and use this to water the garden.
• Turn off the faucet while washing your hands or brushing your teeth.
• Take short showers instead of baths.
• Do laundry and run the dishwasher only when you have a full load.
• When washing dishes in the sink, have a basin of water to rinse the dishes rather than run the faucet for every dish.
• Keep a bottle of water in the fridge rather than let the faucet run to get cold water.
• Only flush the toilet when needed (if it’s yellow let it mellow, if it’s brown flush it down).

If you notice any wet spots on your lawn or roadway, or water in streets or ditches where there is usually no water, please contact the Municipality immediately. This could indicate a leak. Call 902-258-5048 or 902-258-5999.

The Municipality urges all residents to contact Summerhill at 1-833-621-0776 and set up a free home energy efficient visit. They can provide low flow showerheads, low flow aerators and a wrap for hot water piping as well as other heating and power efficient products at no cost.

Notice to residents and visitors of Port Hood

The Port Hood Wharf, Demolition and Stabilization Project is being mobilized. The work is set to begin on Tuesday June 22nd, with the delineation of the work site and installation of the environmental controls. To protect public health and safety, the contractor will be barricading off and closing the road to Sunset Beach. This is a temporary closure while the work is underway. Please be cautious and always stay away from restricted areas as the work progresses. This project is expected to be completed by July 26th. There are alternate access points to Sunset Beach that can be used throughout the construction period.

Municipal Council and staff thank you for your cooperation and support.

Inverness County Mourns

June 3, 2021

KEKWIAMKEK, UNAMA’KI – Council and staff of the Municipality of the County of Inverness mourn the devastating loss of the 215 children whose remains were recently discovered in a mass grave at the site of the former Kamloops Residential School. The Municipality extends its sincere condolences to the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation, and to all the family, friends, and loved ones of these children who never returned home. This horrific discovery is but one of many atrocities caused by the residential school system, forever affecting First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities. Flags at the Port Hood Administrative Building are flying at half-mast to honour the innocent lives lost, the survivors, and their family and friends

Municipal Council and staff join the voices across the country calling for the Government of Canada to prioritize the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action Report, and to undertake the vital work of ensuring every First Nations, Inuit, and Métis community has access to the quality supports and conditions necessary to heal and flourish.

Municipal Council and staff affirm and acknowledge that the County is located within Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people. The Municipality greatly values its ongoing collaborations with We’koqma’q First Nation and all other First Nations communities of Unama’ki. The Municipality is committed to reconciliation and will continue to learn and grow in a manner that supports First Nations, Inuit, and Métis friends and neighbours.

Inverness County Remembers Dr. Jim St. Clair

INVERNESS COUNTY, N.S. – Municipality of the County of Inverness staff and Council were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Jim St. Clair of Mull River on May 11, 2021.

Author, teacher and historian, Jim had a life-long enthusiasm for genealogy and family history. Among countless other accomplishments, Jim was the long-time genealogy editor of the Inverness County Participaper, a culture and heritage periodical published by the Municipality. He was also a founding member of the Inverness County Council of the Arts and worked tirelessly to establish culture centres like the Inverness County Centre for the Arts and the Strathspey Performing Arts Centre.

The folks in his part of Cape Breton knew Jim as a dedicated friend, teacher, mentor, and storyteller. Researchers often came to his door looking for information on their ancestors, and found not only the facts, but the story behind the facts. These stories, told in a deep and warm voice, wove together local anecdotes and oral narratives with historical details of time and place, bringing the past alive for all who listened.

Jim’s death is a great loss to all who knew him and to the Municipality as a whole, and he leaves behind him a more knowledgeable and connected Inverness County due to his work. Municipal Council and staff would like to extend sincere sympathies to Dr. Jim’s family and friends.
