Inverness Wastewater Treatment Plant Replacement
The Inverness Wastewater Treatment Plant is far past its lifecycle and capacity. As a result, it is being fully replaced to allow for increased capacity and improved processes, ensuring that wastewater treatment continues to meet both residential and commercial needs for years to come.

The project will take place at the existing wastewater treatment plant site a 58 Lower Railway St., Inverness.

What to Expect During Construction
There will be no planned interruption to municipal wastewater services throughout the duration of this project.
Construction Hours
Construction work will be conducted during the following hours:
- Monday to Thursday, 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
- Please note, work hours may vary depending on weather and other unforeseen circumstances.
Noise and traffic
- There will be minimal impact to the surrounding area. Light construction noise may be noticeable during working hours.
- There may be occasional traffic disruptions on Lower Railway St. due to the movement of heavy equipment.
Safety concerns
- Access to the construction site is strictly restricted. Unauthorized individuals are prohibited from entering the site for safety reasons.
- Public safety is our priority—please exercise caution around the construction zone.
- Be mindful of large vehicles entering and leaving the area and avoid approaching the construction crews.

Environmental Impacts and Regulatory Compliance
The project design complies with all relevant environmental standards, including:
- Adherence to the Treatment Plants Approval to Operate requirements by the Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Climate Change.
- Compliance with federal Wastewater System Effluent Regulations.
- Environmental Risk Assessment has been completed.
- Climate Change Resilience and Greenhouse Gas Assessment have been incorporated into the design to ensure the plant is sustainable and future-proof.
Budget
This project represents an investment of approximately $18 million, and is a collaboration between the federal, provincial and municipal levels of government.
- At the federal level, the Government of Canada is contributing $7.2 million through theInvesting in Canada Infrastructure Program.
- The Province of Nova Scotia is investing $5.9 million
- The Municipality of Inverness County has committed $4.9 million.
