Casual Labourer – Public Works
Department: Public Works
Reports To: Public Works Buildings & Grounds Site Supervisor
Location: Strathlorne, NS
Position: Full-Time
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Public Works Buildings & Grounds Site Supervisor, this position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of Municipal buildings and grounds. The Public Works Buildings & Grounds Labourer will complete the day to day activities in maintaining Municipal buildings and grounds. As directed, the Public Works Buildings & Grounds Labourer will be responsible for ensuring that Municipal properties are safe, clean and welcoming to staff and visitors.
JOB DUTIES:
- Complete required work on a daily, weekly, monthly and annual basis.
- Complete the landscaping, maintenance and repair of Municipal facilities.
- Complete custodial responsibilities of Municipal facilities.
- Participate in daily pre-work job assessments and toolbox talks.
- Ensure that all job specific safety reviews, controls and other preparatory requirements are in place prior to commencing an assigned duty.
- Organize and maintain the inventory of Buildings & Grounds tools and equipment.
- Maintain courteous and positive public relations with residents of the community, representatives of organizations and visitors by delivering quality service.
- Carry out landscaping duties, including, but not limited to, grass cutting, whipper snipping, raking, planting and care.
- Ensure the completion of snow removal, including shoveling, plowing and salting.
- Perform emergency maintenance of Municipal Buildings & Grounds, as required, including evenings and weekends, upon receiving a call from the Public Works Buildings & Grounds Site Supervisor.
- Operate equipment, such as lawn care equipment, as required.
- Assist with traffic control, as required.
- Adhere to federal & provincial legislation and regulations.
- Adhere to safety regulations at all times.
- Conduct and attend safety, operational and training meetings as required.
- Report all near-misses and incidents to the Public Works Buildings & Grounds Site Supervisor
- Adhere to Municipal policies and procedures.
- Other related duties as assigned.
SAFETY:
- Ensure all policies and procedures set forth by the Municipality of the County of Inverness are observed at all times.
- Report to the Manager of Infrastructure all work situations which are suspected of being unhealthy or unsafe.
- Report to the Manager of Infrastructure, any employee whose on-the-job performance or actions contravenes established safety procedures or work practices.
- Report to the Manager of Infrastructure, all Occupational Health & Safety related injuries or property damage regardless of severity.
- Submit reports on accidents and other hazardous conditions discovered and promptly attend to all hazardous situations.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED) or Completion of post-secondary education.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Experience supervising a team
- Experience and proficiency utilizing maintenance and landscaping equipment.
- WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) and First Aid Training, or willingness to obtain.
- Traffic Control Signer Certification, or willingness to obtain.
- Ability to work cooperatively and effectively in a team environment, as well as, independently.
- Ability to understand and execute oral and written instruction and maintain records, as assigned.
