Accessibility and Seniors’ Safety
The Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC) provides advice to Council on identifying, preventing and eliminating barriers to people with disabilities in municipal programs, services, initiatives and facilities. The Committee plays a pivotal role in helping the Municipality of County of Inverness become a barrier‐free community and ensuring obligations under An Act Respecting Accessibility in Nova Scotia.

Accessibility Advisory Committee
In 2017, Nova Scotia passed the Accessibility Act with a goal of becoming a fully accessible Province by the year 2030. Recommendations were made by persons with disabilities, and the Act recognizes accessibility as a human right.
Municipalities are responsible for setting up an Accessibility Advisory Committee, and appointing members to advise the municipal council on accessibility issues. The Municipality of Inverness County’s committee consists of two municipal councillors and four members of the community. The majority of the members are individuals who self-identify as having a disability.
The role of the Accessibility Advisory Committee is to create a municipal accessibility plan, and to review and update the plan every three years or as new accessibility standards are developed. The committee will advise council on the impact of municipal policies, programs, and services for people with disabilities, while making recommendations to improve accessibility within the
municipality.
