Inverness County Solid Waste Program Highlights

The Municipality of Inverness County is dedicated to safe disposal of solid waste and keeping waste out of landfills where possible. In addition to weekly curbside collection, municipal solid waste facilities in Kenloch and Strathlorne have a series of programs year-round to make waste disposal easy and convenient for residents. Read through the program highlights below to learn more.

Kenloch Waste Management Facility

Free Programs

Through partnerships with outside waste diversion organizations, the Municipality is pleased to accept the following materials at Kenloch Waste Management Facility at no cost to Inverness County Residents:

Paint/Stains and Empty Cans

Household and aerosol paints and stains are accepted year-round.

Details:

  • Paint must be in its original container, tightly sealed, with readable labels.
  • Empty paint cans accepted, no lid required

Motor Oils/Filters and Aerosols

Used automobile maintenance products do not belong in landfills. The following materials are accepted at Kenloch Waste Management Facility for no-cost:

  • Oils
  • Filters
  • Plastic Containers (anti-freeze bottles, oil bottles, etc.)
  • Anti-freeze
  • Aerosol containers (WD-40, brake cleaners, etc.)

Cooking Oil Drop Off (Fats, Oils, Greases)

Do you have large volumes of cooking oil? Fats, Oils, and Greases do not belong down in the drain. Both residential and commercial customers can bring the following materials to Kenloch Waste Management Facility for free:

  • Cooking oils (vegetable, canola, etc.)
  • Food grease (bacon fat, chicken, sausages, etc.)
  • Butter, margarine, and shortening
  • Salad dressing
  • Gravy
  • Mayonnaise
  • Batters
  • Nut butters (peanut, almond, cashew, etc.)
  • Heavy cream

Tire Drop Off

While tire retailers accept used tires for safe disposal, residents may also bring them to Kenloch Waste Management Facility at no charge. Accepted tires are:

  • Car
  • Truck
  • Motorcycle
  • Camper
  • Trailer

Heavy Garbage

The municipality typically organizes a heavy garbage collection each spring; however, residents may bring the following heavy garbage items to Kenloch Waste Management Facility for free year-round:

  • Appliances (stoves, fridges, dishwashers, etc.)
  • Furniture (couches, mattresses, tables, chairs, etc.)

Tipping Fees

Effective September 2, 2025, the Municipality introduced a revised tipping fee structure at Kenloch Waste Management Facility to reflect increased operational and transportation costs associated with processing and diverting materials in accordance with updated provincial regulations. The tipping fees are as follows:

  • Sorted load: $48.00/metric tonne
  • Unsorted load: $110.00/metric tonne
  • Mixed load: $235.00/metric tonne
  • Nonresidential residual waste: $97.20/metric tonne

Definitions:

  • Sorted load: separated construction and demolition materials only.
  • Unsorted load: construction and demolition materials only, that have not been separated.
  • Mixed load: construction and demolition materials that have not been separated, mixed with regular garbage, recyclables, organics, or other banned materials.

The following two programs are subject to tipping fees:

Construction & Demolition Waste

Construction and demolition materials brought to the Kenloch Waste Management Facility are transported to the GFL Environmental Landfill in Boylston, Guysborough County, or to an approved waste diversion facility depending on the type and condition of the material.

Examples of construction and demolition materials include:

  • Clean and treated lumber (excluding creosote-treated wood)
  • Drywall
  • Asphalt shingles
  • Concrete and masonry (bricks, tiles, blocks)
  • Metal, glass, insulation, and plaster
  • Flooring materials (e.g., laminate, hardwood, ceramic tile)
  • Fixtures, cabinetry, windows, and doors

Suggested Sorting Practices

Leaf and Yard Waste

Accepted materials:

  • Grass clippings and leaves
  • Plant and garden waste
  • Brush and hedge trimmings
  • Tree branches with a diameter of 5cm or less

Not accepted:

  • Items in plastic bags
  • Tree or root balls
  • Sod
  • Branches larger than 5cm in diameter
  • Pet waste

Electronics

Electronic Products Recycling Association (EPRA) is a national not-for-profit organization that provides the Recycle My Electronics™ program.

Accepted electronics:

  • Countertop appliances
  • Time and weight measurement devices
  • Personal care and garment care appliances
  • Small and full-sized cleaning appliances
  • Air treatment appliances
  • TVs, phones, computers
  • Home theater systems and portable audio/video systems

Batteries

Improper disposal of batteries is dangerous and may cause property damage or serious injury. Batteries do not belong in garbage or blue bags. Battery recycling is available at the Strathlorne Municipal Recycling Facility and the Municipal Administration Building (375 Main St., Port Hood).

Lights

The following light products are accepted:

  • Fluorescent tubes (straight, curved, U, circular, square, etc.)
  • Compact fluorescent lights (CFLs)
  • High-intensity discharge lights (HIDs)
  • Incandescent lights
  • Halogen lights
  • Light emitting diodes (LEDS), both lights and tubes

Ballasts and light fixtures are not accepted materials. String lights (ex: Christmas lights) are also not accepted.
